SUMMARY:Common Roots - Men's Peer Support
DESCRIPTION:A Monthly Open Gathering for Men (18+) \nJoin us for the launch of Common Roots! Our first meeting\, August 3rd\, will be led by Pieter van Winkle\, Erik DaRosa\, Tom Karrel\, Davis Cowles\, and Dave Mills. This meeting will be an introductory and discussion to the circle. We encourage you to attend to learn more about the group and see if this circle is the connection that you have been looking for in the valley. Food and drinks will be available. \nCOMMON ROOTS IS A CIRCLE FOR MEN to share what’s real in their lives\, be heard\, and listen to other men share their experience. The goal is to connect valley men\, spark brotherhood and foster healthy and mature masculine culture in a world where men are encouraged to “go it alone.” \nTHIS IS NOT TRADITIONAL THERAPY. Rather\, it is a gathering that challenges traditional ideas of support groups through peer empowerment\, deep listening\, and embodiment of new ways of being that offers strength\, hope and even the seeds of cultural change. \nThere is no charge for this gathering.\nOpen to all who identify as he/him\, age 18+.

SUMMARY:Fly Casting for the Soul
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we use the process of fly casting as a tool for mindfulness. Fly casting is to fly fishing as archery is to bow hunting. It is a veritable art form whose cadence and repetitive nature has been likened to similar rhythmic processes used in therapy to promote positivity\, calm and focus. Conducted on dryland\, or a pond\, without a hook\, fly casting can become a form of meditation. \nIn fact\, each session begins and ends with a short 3-5 minute meditation on acceptance and letting go; a focus of this course is on the reduction of stress and frustration by seeing that there are no mistakes\, only learning\, and there is no perfection––only progress. We call it fishing for a reason because we are always fishing whether we catch or not: we consider nature and waters as a means of healing. \nTwo sessions available: \nSession 1: 9:00AM – 10:15AM \nSession 2: 10:30AM – 11:45AM \nNo previous experience required.  Four students per instructor.  All equipment provided.  Please bring warm clothing\, a rain jacket and sunglasses or other eye protection. \n\nREGISTER\n\n \nABOUT YOUR INTRUCTOR\nJohn Dietsch\, your casting instructor\, has been guiding in Aspen for almost four decades. He is also the founder of Fish for Wellness\, an organization dedicated to exploring the connection between fishing\, immersion in nature\, and wellness. He is a master fly-fisherman and teacher who helps his clients and students follow their passion by connecting with nature. John is committed to helping accomplished anglers and never-ever beginners alike to look inward using the sport and waters as a powerful conduit for stress reduction\, inward reflection and change. John may have been seen in the movie ‘A River Runs Through It’\, as he was the instructor on this magnificent film!

SUMMARY:A New Kind of Social
DESCRIPTION:MAKING GOOD CONNECTIONS\nWhy Come? \nPeople need 1:1 connections\, yet it is hard to find good ones.\nWe want a local community outside of the house\, but we’re busy with work and home. We’re active and yet we spend too much time alone. something is missing. But what? \nOur May series is designed to answer “what’s missing” and fill the void with the one true thing that works – connection and community. Personal\, meaningful\, local – knowing people is what helps us feel less anxious and lonely\, more alive and cheery. \nWho Comes? \nJoin us if you enjoy non-superficial conversations\, on personal and relevant topics\, in a safe space for idea exchange. Your take-away will be personal – a roster of new names and local faces. Meeting in community isn’t therapy\, but it is therapeutic! \nHere’s How it Works \nEach meeting has a simple theme and activity to think about\, talk about\, and get to know each other. We\nmeet in small groups to listen\, exchange ideas\, and share a laugh or two. We focus on interests and concerns\, not politics. \nWe invite you to just be yourself\, be curious\, and find common ground. This is how we learn and this is how we roll. \nTake-Aways \n> Meet people outside your usual social circles. Befriend your curiosity. \n> Learn to get past the superficial stage in conversations. Everyone has a story. \n> Encounter new names and faces. Turn strangers into friends. \n> Become a friend. Be part of a supportive network and lift people up. \nA New Kind of Social is hosted by Adelaide Waters\, founder of Women’s Forum in partnership with Aspen Strong. Welcoming newcomers and old-timers\, all backgrounds and types. \nScholarships available upon request. \n\nREGISTER

SUMMARY:Clay on the Brain at Carbondale Clay Center
DESCRIPTION:Aspen Strong and Carbondale Clay Center present a beginning wheel throwing workshop with CCC resident artist\, Brian Chen\, on Sunday\, February 19th from 10-12:30PM. In this 2.5 hour class\, students will learn how to center and pull terra cotta clay on the potter’s wheel to create a finished piece with the option to paint w/ a variety of under-glazes. The goal of this workshop is to explore the meditative and therapeutic properties of working with clay. \nThe workshop is limited to 6 participants and registration is required. \nNo pre-requisites are required. \nCreating pottery is known to be therapeutic\, allowing for self-expression and self-discovery while offering stress relief and relaxation. When working clay\, we have the ability to connect our minds to our hands\, creating the sense of synergy between our mind and body. \nArt Therapy: Journal of the American Art Therapy Association states\, “clay-work makes possible an entire non-verbal language or communication for the creator\, through which his or her mental realm\, emotional life\, and primary object relations can be expressed.” \n\nCLASS IS FULL! Please Register TO GET UPDATES ABOUT FUTURE ART WORKSHOPS:\nOur FREE workshops are made possible by our generous donors.\nPlease become a donor today!

SUMMARY:The PEER Movement: Exploring Different Modalities of PEER Support
DESCRIPTION:A Lunch & Learn Panel Discussion\nPanel discussion will explore what a peer coach is and ways to engage peer support in the addictions and co-occurring disorders profession. \nAbout this event\nThis panel will explore what a peer coach is and how peer recovery support is being utilized currently in the field. We will also look at the different modalities of peer support and explain more effective ways to utilize this workforce in treatment settings as we move into the future. Panelists include individuals who operate in both the clinical and peer systems and have deep insight into the need for these two areas to collaborate more directly. \nPanelists:\n\nMODERATOR: CJ Oliveira\, CAAP\nCJ Oliveira is a Certified Addiction Specialist and a CCAR trained recovery coach. CJ earned a Bachelor of science degree in psychology at Colorado State University in 2008 and is currently developing and managing the Alumni and Aftercare Services Program for a treatment center in Boulder. He uses both his lived experience in drug addiction and professional background to develop and manage programs with a strong focus on how they impact clients\, their loved one’s\, and the communities they live in.\nAllison Harden\, Peer Supervisor\, Beyond Betty\nAllison Harden’s personal recovery journey led her to employment roles in Community Outreach at the Betty Ford Center and the Center for Dependency Addiction and Rehabilitation (CeDAR). She has a Master of Science from the University of Denver in Organizational Leadership. She holds the Colorado Peer and Family Specialist credential (CPFS)\, the National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist credential (NCPRSS)\, and the Recovery Coach Professional (RCP). A better approach to include the client’s voice. Charles served as a frontline worker during the pandemic and has had a positive impact in over 200 lives. Charles’ client centered approach and his creativity play a big role in his coaching practice and was the inspiration behind the development of our program’s use of the 7 dimensions of wellness to help guide clients when setting/reaching goals. Charles was recently named Director of Communication and is pleased to announce that his podcast “Get Ke’nekted” will be ready to roll out in late Fall of 2022.\nRachel Fowler\, CCAR Trainer\nRachel Fowler has been working as a Recovery Coach Professional\, Trainer\, and Supervisor since 2017. SUMMARY:Faulty Human Mental Fitness Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Community Mental Fitness Fair titled Faulty Human\, supports awareness and funding for The Aspen Strong Mental Health Fund held at Aspen Community Foundation. The fund subsidizes mental health services for under-insured and uninsured individuals and families who cannot afford to pay for them. Scholarships are awarded for up to 10 sessions per request for private therapy\, group therapy and psychiatric assessment. \nThe title Faulty Human comes from artwork and inspiration from local High School student and artist\, Axel Livingston:\n“Mental illness is a continuous cycle for me\, the second I think I have one base covered I seem to slip up on another. I find myself trapped in the jaws of something I don’t quite understand. I’ve found it very helpful to express the pain & try to unattach from it. It’s beneficial to attribute my pain to a condition rather than think of myself as a faulty human. The idea around this piece is mental growth. I have only grown because I expressed myself. There is a profound power in acknowledging & releasing pain and discomfort. However we may do this\, it all works the same”. \nIn reading is explanation of what mental illness meant to him\, we realized the shame that may come with the feeling of being a faulty human. However\, we are all perfectly imperfect. We are all “faulty” in some way. We want to take this opportunity to celebrate our differences and our similarities. To come together as one\, one community\, that encourages people to be proud of who they are\, and to provide the community with as many resources and tools that support the four pillars of mental fitness. \nThis year\, our goal is to reach $100\,000 in support of The Aspen Strong Mental Health Fund held at Aspen Community Foundation. A donation of $1250 would cover one family or individual with ten therapy sessions they would not otherwise receive. Even a small donation can make a big impact on the communities mental well-being! \nIf you are interested in becoming a sponsor\, please email lindsey@aspenstrong.org or click here to donate now.
